How to clean a hydromassage bathtub – a practical step-by-step guide

A hydromassage bathtub is an investment in everyday comfort and the chance to relax in your own bathroom. The system of jets and water streams lets you create a taste of a spa at home, but for it to keep working properly over the long term, it needs the right care. Unlike a traditional bathtub, hydromassage models require care not only for the acrylic surface but also for the hidden system of pipes, jets and pumps, where limescale deposits, cosmetic residue or micro-organisms can build up.

Regular cleaning of the hydromassage system is essential both for hygiene and for the long-term durability of the whole system. In this guide you'll find concrete, practical advice – from a quick cleaning procedure, through choosing the right products, to descaling and daily habits that will help you keep your hydromassage bathtub in excellent condition for many years of use.

How to clean a hydromassage bathtub quickly and safely – a short guide

The express procedure below will let you carry out a full cleaning of a hydromassage bathtub in around 30 minutes.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Empty the bathtub and rinse the whole surface with lukewarm water.

  2. Fill the bathtub with cold water up to the level marked on the "Minimum water level" sticker, or about 5 cm above the highest-mounted jet. For a more eco-friendly approach, you can use water left over from a bath, provided no other chemicals have been added to it (only a bath in plain, clean water).

  3. Pour in the measured amount of the dedicated hydromassage system cleaning product (amount according to the product label). FORTE PRIME liquid was specially developed and holds the appropriate certificates and approvals for use even in medical facilities.

  4. Run the hydromassage for one full working cycle (20 minutes), so the solution flushes through the entire pipe system.

  5. Leave the water in the bathtub for 20-30 minutes after the cycle finishes.
  6. Drain the water, rinse the bathtub with clean water and dry it with a soft microfibre cloth.

Frequency: Carry out full cleaning of the circuit at intervals of at least 3-4 weeks. Rinse and wipe the bathtub surface after every use. If there's a longer break in using the hydromassage, disinfection should be carried out before the next planned bath. Excellent's Discovery Premium systems have a built-in counter that shows on the display when the system needs disinfecting.

If the system hasn't been cleaned for a long time, or you notice a strong smell from the product, repeat the process – run the rinse a second time.

Automatic disinfection of Discovery Premium systems

To maintain proper hygiene, the Discovery Premium range of systems is fitted with an advanced disinfection system. By activating different massage sections, as well as changing their intensity and dosing the liquid correctly, this system provides comprehensive cleaning of the hydromassage installation. It also counts the number of baths taken and, at the right moment, lets you know that disinfection is needed (a flashing icon in the HYDRO window). To run disinfection, fill the bathtub with warm water to the indicated level, press and hold the HYDRO icon for 5 seconds (in the OPTION menu). Then, when prompted, confirm that you want to run disinfection. Once you confirm, the disinfection programme will be activated. The process takes around 8 minutes. After that time the system will start sounding a beep (every 20 s) to signal that disinfection has finished. You should then drain the water and rinse the bathtub. When the level of disinfection liquid in the tank reaches the minimum, the user will be told about it when starting disinfection mode. In that case, top up the liquid in the
dedicated disinfection tank and then start the programme. Once the low-liquid-level message appears, the system will allow only one more disinfection cycle. The next start of the programme will only be possible once the tank has been topped up.

Comprehensive cleaning of a hydromassage bathtub

This section covers the full cleaning procedure: from preparation, through cleaning the surface, to disinfecting the pipe and jet system. Each stage is described with concrete instructions and approximate times.

Cleaning and caring for the bathtub's acrylic surface

Start with what's visible to the naked eye: the bathtub shell, the edges, the headrests and the control panel.

Surface cleaning instructions:

  1. Rinse the bathtub with lukewarm water to remove sand and loose dirt.

  2. Apply a small amount of a gentle liquid to a soft sponge (an acrylic cleaner or a solution of water with a mild washing-up liquid).

  3. Wash the sides, the bottom, the areas around the jets, the drain and the overflow without pressing hard.

  4. Use a soft detail brush for grout lines, the areas around the jets and the nooks near the overflow.

  5. Rinse the whole surface thoroughly with running water so you don't leave streaks or detergent residue.

  6. Finally, wipe the bathtub dry with a soft cloth – this reduces the build-up of limescale and water marks.

How to clean a hydromassage bathtub jet?

We recommend cleaning the jets with a brush with fine bristles or a soft cloth. For cleaning, it's best to use a cleaning product intended for taps/fittings and shower enclosures. Mild cleaning products such as shampoo, soap or washing-up liquid can also be used. For a better result with air jets, we recommend unscrewing them using a 2.5 mm hex key. Do not use solvents, caustic agents or products containing abrasive ingredients.

If in doubt, remember to check the instructions or consult the bathtub manufacturer's service department.

Forte Prime liquid from Excellent

Forte Prime is designed for cleaning and disinfecting the water installation of hydromassage bathtubs. One of the ingredients of Forte Prime converts any mineral deposits covering the bathtub's components (so-called limescale) into water-soluble compounds and prevents these deposits from forming out of the water. The product does not damage plastic coatings, or chrome-plated and gold-plated components.

  • disinfects the water and air installation;
  • removes bacteria and fungi;
  • effectively removes limescale;
  • ensures complete cleanliness;
  • is enough for approx. 6 applications.

Why does a hydromassage bathtub need more than just surface cleaning?

With an ordinary bathtub, wiping the shell with a sponge is enough and you're done. Hydromassage bathtubs are a completely different story – the acrylic shell is only the visible part of the installation. Underneath it lies a network of pipes, a circulation pump and massage jets, through which water flows out under strong pressure during a bath. Once the pump switches off, warm water stays in the pipes – an ideal environment for bacterial biofilm to develop. Studies show that over 90% of bacteria in typical water installations are found within the biofilm structure, not free in the water. This means that simply draining the water doesn't solve the hygiene problem.

In our hydromassage systems, once the bathtub has been drained, only trace amounts of water remain – perhaps a glassful across the whole bathtub – in the form of droplets held in place by "surface tension". The pipe system is built and designed so that all the water flows back into the bathtub. In addition, in the Inspire-XL, Optima Relax and Discovery Premium systems, because the water pump sits low – meaning gravity alone can't force the water to flow back into the bathtub – an extra drain is fitted to route water from the system to the sewer via a specialist bathtub siphon with a double outlet.

All our hydromassage systems are fitted with an air system with jets in the bottom of the bathtub and have a built-in automatic pipe-drying system that switches on once the water has drained from the bathtub, blowing air through the pipework for a few minutes after the bath. Our flagship Discovery Premium system additionally has an Extra Dry system, which also blows out the pipework of the water system. This helps, but it doesn't replace periodic chemical cleaning and disinfection.

How often should you clean a hydromassage bathtub and its components?

How often you need to clean depends on three factors: how often you use the bathtub, the water quality in your area, and the type of bath products you use. Below you'll find an approximate schedule, which you can adjust to your own needs.

Recommended cleaning intervals:

Component

Frequency

Notes

Acrylic surface

After every bath

A light rinse and wipe with a soft cloth

Full disinfection of the system (pipes, jets, pump)

Every 6–8 baths or every 2 months

More often with heavy use

Descaling the hydromassage system

Every 3–6 months

More often with very hard water

Removing and hand-cleaning the massage jets

Every 3–4 months

As per the manufacturer's instructions

Checking the seals and rubber components

1–2 times a year

Check their condition, lubricate with silicone if needed

If you use the bathtub occasionally (e.g. 1–2 times a month), plan to disinfect the system at least once a quarter. Water standing in the pipes for a long time creates ideal conditions for harmful bacteria to develop.

Regional tip: In Poland, water is particularly hard in the Mazovia region (210–323 mg CaCO₃/l), in Greater Poland and Lower Silesia. If you live in these regions, descaling every 3 months is a sensible minimum. If your water's parameters (hardness) differ from the standard, you should adjust the frequency of care to match local conditions. Using a hydromassage system under non-standard conditions shortens its useful life, and a lack of maintenance and care shortens it drastically.

The most common mistakes when cleaning a hydromassage bathtub and how to avoid them

Even good intentions can end up damaging the acrylic coating or blocking the jets. Here's a list of typical mistakes and how to avoid them.

Mistake

Consequences

Correct solution

Using abrasive products and rough sponges

Dull scratches on the surface

Soft sponge or microfibre cloth

Pouring drain-unblocking agents (e.g. Kret) into the system

Damage to the seals and pump

A dedicated liquid for hydromassage systems

Mixing different chemicals

Dangerous fumes, chemical reactions

Using one product at a time

Only cleaning the pipe system once you notice a smell

Mature biofilm that's hard to remove

Regular cleaning every 6–8 baths

Ignoring the manufacturer's instructions

Loss of warranty, damage

Following the recommendations on concentrations and products

Rule of thumb: It's better to clean more often with mild products than rarely and aggressively. Keeping a bathtub clean takes consistency, not force.

How to keep a hydromassage bathtub clean every day – simple habits

Consistency and a few simple rules significantly reduce the amount of work needed for thorough cleaning. Building these habits keeps the bathtub hygienic with virtually no effort.

Daily and weekly habits:

  • A quick rinse of the bathtub after every use and a wipe with a soft cloth;

  • Avoiding oily cosmetics (bath oils, bath bombs with a lot of shea butter)

  • Showering before getting into the bathtub – to rinse off sweat and body/hair products;

  • Leaving the bathroom door open after a bath, to reduce moisture and limit mould growth on the grout.

Important! Bath oils must never be used in acrylic and hydromassage bathtubs, because they don't dissolve in water, are sticky and settle on surfaces – they can't be rinsed off even with warm water, and can also leave stains on the bathtub's acrylic surface. Instead, we recommend using SPA bath salts.

A weekly "service" (e.g. on Sunday evening):

  • Wipe down the control panel

  • Check that the jets aren't mechanically blocked

  • Check for the first signs of limescale (white streaks)

Pair the habit of cleaning the bathtub with a specific time or day of the week. Consistency is the key to keeping a hydromassage bathtub in good condition for years – so the warm water for your evening bath will always be crystal clear.
