At what height should a washbasin be installed?

Choosing the washbasin installation height is a decision that directly affects how comfortable your bathroom is to use. While general standards exist, in practice a lot depends on the height of household members, the type of washbasin, and even the chosen faucet model.

We explain how to plan the installation correctly, so that using your bathroom every day is comfortable and ergonomic.

📌 Table of contents:

📝 Summary:

  • The standard washbasin installation height is 85–90 cm, but it's worth adjusting it to the users' height.
  • The type of washbasin (countertop, wall-hung) and the type of faucet affect the final installation level.
  • Examples based on Excellent washbasins: Luqa, Cori 2.0, Oceana and Jima.
  • The most common mistakes are a mismatch with the fittings and installation that is too high or too low.

Standard washbasin installation height

The standard adopted in Poland states that the top edge of the washbasin should be at a height of approx. 85–90 cm from the floor. This solution is suited to the average height of an adult and works well in most layouts.

However, in modern bathrooms it's not always worth sticking to a “rigid” value – especially when the household includes taller or shorter people, or children.

Factors affecting installation height

Users' height

  • For shorter people (below 170 cm), it's better to lower the installation (approx. 82–84 cm).

  • For taller people (above 185 cm), a height of 92–95 cm will be more comfortable.

  • In a family bathroom, a compromise is usually chosen.

Type of washbasin

  • Countertop washbasin – the installation height depends on the height of the countertop and the bowl itself. If you're wondering what height a countertop washbasin should be, take the sum of the countertop and bowl heights so that the top edge falls at approx. 85–90 cm. Installing a countertop washbasin also requires preparing an opening, cutting a hole in the countertop, fitting the drain, and sealing it.

  • Wall-hung washbasin – mounted directly to the wall, so it's easier to stick to standard norms.

  • Washbasin with a tap hole – you need to factor in the extra comfort of using the fittings.

Type of faucet

  • Deck-mounted faucet – requires matching the height of the countertop and washbasin so the water stream is comfortable; when doing so, it's worth planning the installation of the washbasin faucet so its height suits the bowl.

  • Wall-mounted faucet – it's important that the washbasin is installed so the water stream falls centrally into it; correct connection to the water supply and a leak test after installation are also important..

Bathroom purpose

  • In a family bathroom, the universal 85–90 cm is usually chosen. It's worth matching the height to the purpose and daily use, as it affects everyday comfort and the overall feel of the space.

  • In a guest toilet, a lower height can be used so it is also comfortable for children. For people with limited mobility, the washbasin should not be installed higher than 80 cm. It's also worth leaving adequate space around it so it is comfortable and functional to use.

  • Oceana – a wall-hung washbasin with a tap hole, available in two sizes. Thanks to its design, it's easy to install at the standard height of 85–90 cm.

Washbasin cabinets — comfort and style in one arrangement

A cabinet with a built-in washbasin is a solution that combines the functionality of a piece of furniture with elegant design, helps organise your bathroom space, and also offers extra storage space. Elegant, minimalist finish, ideal for modern interiors, with a soft-close system and sturdy construction. It's worth completing the whole zone with practical bathroom accessories.

Most common mistakes when installing a washbasin

  • Installing it too high or too low, which causes discomfort and ergonomic problems; to avoid issues, it's worth determining the height using a spirit level against the floor and marking the washbasin installation line on the wall.

  • Mismatching the faucet to the washbasin height – e.g. a faucet that's too low next to a tall countertop washbasin.

  • Not taking into account the cabinet or plumbing height – especially for countertop models; for example, the washbasin drain is usually planned at 55 cm from the floor.

Summary

The optimal washbasin installation height is 85–90 cm from the floor; if you're wondering what height a washbasin should be, this is the range generally adopted, although the final installation depends on the user's height, the type of model and the chosen faucet. This way, using the bathroom every day will be comfortable and natural, and the right setting may vary depending on the specific arrangement. Determining the level itself also requires careful planning — using a spirit level makes DIY installation easier.
